90-minute classes in the privacy (and ideally, the safety and comfort) of your small home studio, or makeshift space for movement.
Even in very limited space, and sometimes especially when we are alone and not being observed, we can make big progress in accessing intrinsic sources of movement that contribute to both expression and expertise.
Spiral Body Techniques® often involves a slow, private unwinding of unhelpful habits and a gradual deepening into possibilities for fluid, complex, and spatially-engaged movement. The movement I offer is in this spirit, and will emphasize the full panorama of movement in the ball and socket joints, harmonized with a fluid spine and rib orchestration. I encourage release and reeducation of the abdominal musculature, to allow freedom and expressivity of the pelvis, unhooked from holding or rigid comportment learned through cultural expectations around shape and beauty, and often part of contemporary dance training.
We'll begin on the floor, exploring key SBT concepts in movement phrases that progress from simple and repetitive to flowing and more complex. We will take the time to go a bit deeper than a fast-paced studio class allows. Then we'll explore figure-8s and spiralic movement in bipedality, before developing a phrase or phrases that hold SBT principles while allowing dancers to interpret and progress at their own pace.
