How do we reclaim fullness in constrained conditions? How do we move through internal and external pressure without hardening or collapsing?

These are 90-minute SBT classes exploring SBT's vocabulary in the privacy (and ideally, the safety) of your small home studio, or makeshift space for movement. Even in limited space, and sometimes especially when we are alone, we can make big progress.

Spiral Body Techniques® often involves a slow, private unwinding of habit and a deepening into possibility. We move from the ball and socket joints, a fluid spine, the pelvis unhooked from holding or rigid comportment.

We'll explore a handful of key SBT concepts that show up in live classes, taking time to go a little deeper than a fast-paced studio class allows. Then we'll explore figure-8s and spiralic movement, before developing a phase that holds SBT principles while allowing dancers to interpret and progress at their own pace.

These are small-space Spiral Body Techniques® classes, offered virtually. We start simply and go into detail with key connections: ball-and-socket joint interplay; the role of undulation in sensing flesh-based timing and underlying rhythmic complexity; and how overlapping and intersecting spiralic patterns coexist. We spend time on the floor in both simple and more complex material. Typically I coach a simple transition from the floor that invites dancers to feel the multiplicity of intrinsic body adaptation to "level" within seemingly straightforward movement. I then create standing material that allows for application of those connections and principles. These classes are a cousin to live, in-person SBT classes. A recording is shared with all registered participants.

Dancers are encouraged to do whatever they want with their cameras, and typically there is a mix of cameras “on” and “off.” “On” allows me to sense with dancers when it’s time to move onto something else; “off” allows dancers the freedom to explore without observation.

The class moves quickly but without urgency. Ample repetition builds familiarity.

All levels are welcome. This class is ideal for out-of-town folks, SBT teachers, and advanced students who want to delve more deeply into one or two principles. It’s equally intended for so-called beginners or non-dancer-movers who want a movement practice that is not tied to controlling or changing body shape.

These classes are distinct from the Alone-Together practices, which are shorter (45-minute), verbally guided improvisational movement sessions calling attention to weight, breath, and the nuances of intrinsic movement. The Alone-Together sessions are intentionally absent a particular goal, aside from honoring the body’s innate intelligence and expressivity, and creating space for discovery and knowledge-cultivation outside of an outcome orientation. In this sense they are sophisticated practices, but they require no cultivated skill beyond what humans accomplish daily in movement.
