Spiral Body Techniques® engages the body’s intrinsic system of fluidity, spirals, undulation and curve that allow dancers to navigate complex movement patterns with ease, safety, and joy. In this class we will emphasize the rotation of the ball-and-socket joints, flexion and extension, and the release and reeducation of habitually constricted abdominals in order to more easefully access the body’s spirals. All movements will emerge from the next in fluid spiralic pattern.

All phrasework in SBT is spontaneously composed, so both the teacher and the student are practicing learning the phrase at the same time, generating repeatable phrases of increasing complexity that emphasize the body’s intelligence more than simply “getting the steps right,” while simultaneously pursuing clarity, detail, and honing one’s memory. We will practice the somatics of sensing and exploring these movements in order to “really dance” the more complex phrasework. The application of somatics principles of awareness, fluctuations in size and speed, and integration with whole self contributes to rigorous dancing.

Spiral Body Techniques® is the dance and movement framework developed by choreographer Molly Shanahan. The March SBT class series at Mascher will be taught by Kalila Kingsford Smith, who is among the second cohort of certified Essential Level SBT teachers.
